National Social Work Month
March is National Social Work Month, and now, more than ever, The Salvation Army and those we serve are deeply grateful for our social services staff across our three-state division for their resilience, their commitment to people in need and for the countless ways they have offered their skills, support and service, particularly over the last two difficult years.
Today we continue our series on Salvation Army social workers by shining the spotlight on Misty Snyder, who works as a case manager at the Mitchell Corps in South Dakota.
Corps officer Capt. Deb Middendorp shares these words about Misty:
“Misty Snyder is a valuable asset to The Salvation Army in Mitchell. She starts each morning in the kitchen to prepare and serve a fabulous hot meal for all our Compassion Kitchen guests. In the afternoon, Misty serves as our case manager in the front office. She greets each person who walks in our front door with kindness and compassion.
Whether she’s helping people get the food they need or other assistance, Misty is extremely organized and efficient. She always has great advice or direction if another organization in the community can offer additional resources to our clients, many of whom would call Misty their friend. We appreciate Misty's hard work and dedication to the mission of The Salvation Army.”
Salvation Army social workers provide numerous support services, from connecting clients to community resources—including behavioral health support, substance abuse counseling and employment placement—to helping clients manage their medications, apply for Medicare or Medicaid and secure permanent housing. Above all, social workers offer a safe, supportive space and a listening ear for their clients to talk honestly about the challenges they are facing.
National Social Work Month was first organized in March of 1963 by the National Association of Social Workers as a way to encourage public support for the profession. In 1984, a joint resolution of Congress was passed and was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan under Proclamation 5167 on March 22 as National Professional Social Work Month.
