The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of January 1

Dec 29, 2023

As we embark on a new year, let us make generosity a cornerstone of our resolutions.

We’re approaching the time of year when we set goals for the year to come.  In this verse from Proverbs, King Solomon implores us to be kind to the less fortunate.  But this verse goes beyond mere charity:  it speaks to the very heart of generosity.  When we are kind to those in need, we are essentially lending to the Lord Himself.

The new year symbolizes a fresh start, an opportunity to leave behind the old and embrace the new. Along with setting personal goals, we can consider how we can be a source of blessing to others. Proverbs 19:17 challenges us to think beyond ourselves and extend kindness to those who may be less fortunate.

The second part of the verse assures us that God sees our acts of kindness and promises to reward us for what we have done. The reward may not be immediate or material, but we can find joy in making a positive impact and following the example of our compassionate Creator.

There are many practical ways to live out Proverbs 19:17. We can perform intentional acts of kindness throughout the year like helping a neighbor or volunteering at a local charity.  We can donate money to help a good cause in the community.  We can also participate in community initiatives to contribute to the well-being of those around us.

As we enter the new year, let us resolve to be a people known for our kindness and generosity, and let our actions speak louder than our words.
