The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of October 9
We have access to a godly life, a life that shows others who He is because we have access to God’s divine power.
We are given great power by God to use for His glory. This power comes with a great responsibility: to hold one another accountable. In this chapter and book of the bible, Peter is writing to believers to help them pursue spiritual maturity.
Peter is a lot like us. Like Peter, we have said and done things we regret, but his actions and experiences did not define who he was. We are defined by who we are in Jesus Christ.
It’s important to note what Peter is saying as he gets to the latter half of this verse—specifically: “through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence.” Without knowledge of God’s word, we don’t have an understanding of God’s love, faithfulness, mercy, and grace. To love God is to know Him. Studying God’s word gives us insight into His holiness and how we can respond to His love for us.
In summary, 2 Peter 1:3 is a reminder of God’s gift to us. We get to live a life with Him and avoid the fate of this world. Jesus was sent to earth to give us eternal life and peace that is different from the peace of the world. The peace of God allows us to rest in Him and lean on Him when we are fearful or troubled. Since we are granted the gift of eternal life, we have the opportunity to tell others about God’s promises to His people.
God doesn’t ask us to be perfect; He asks us to be faithful. We are granted the knowledge of His excellence, and we get to share the good news with others.
