Behind the Shield: Brenda Bertram, Family Thrift Store Manager, Fond du Lac

Sep 13, 2018

Brenda Bertram has been the Manager of The Salvation Army Store in Fond du Lac, since June 2017. In her role, Brenda is in charge of all aspects of the store, marketing, scheduling, ordering, dealing with HR issues, and problem solving. Her job has her wearing many hats and that is something she really enjoys.

Q. How did you first learn about The Salvation Army?
A. As far back as I can remember, I have memories of the bells ringing  in December. As for working for The Salvation Army, I didn't consider it until I was asked to take the position. As a student working on my Business Management degree, I was not actively looking for a job, when the captains offered it to me.  I met the Captains at my sons Judo practice. It was during their practice that I did my homework and got to know them. They saw my work ethic and character over the course of a few years. I am very thankful they offered me the job.

Q. What is your favorite part about working at The Salvation Army?
A. I enjoy working with people and being in charge of the marketing. My favorite part is doing the social media.

Q. What has been your favorite experience with The Salvation Army?
A. My favorite experience would have to be the whole experience. Captain Steve and Telinda have built a great core group to work with. I am thankful for the hard and easy parts of the job because I am gaining valuable experience.

Q. What is one thing you believe the world should know about The Salvation Army?
A. I think everyone should know how well The Salvation Army uses the funds they are given. I try to get that message our as much as I can. The tag line I like to say as people leave The Thrift Store is, 'Thank you for supporting the local community.' The proceeds from the store go to support the programs in Fond du Lac.

Q. What are three words you'd use to describe The Salvation Army?
A. Hardworking, Heart and Helping

Q. Is there anything you'd like to add?
A. I have really enjoyed moving the store around. My team and I have had many compliments as to how nice, clean and organized the store is. I am proud of my team.
