how did you first learn about the salvation army?

My parents took me to The Salvation Army church as a baby in Salina, Kansas. They immersed my six siblings and I into the culture and mission of The Salvation Army. They were faithful members called "soldiers" and wore the uniform with blue epaulets. They were lay leaders teaching Sunday School, Character Building Programs, and volunteering for fundraising events. My dad worked part-time as the Community Center Director at night after a full-time job during the day. He coached sports teams on the weekends in our segregated part of town. He organized teams so that children of color had the opportunity to play in leagues in the 60s and 70s. My mother was his driver, equipment coach, and oversaw the concession stands that raised money for uniforms.

What is your favorite part about working at the salvation army?

The people I work with and those we serve. As Executive Director of Development, I lead a team of 28 development professionals. Each unique in their talents, expertise, and experience. The Divisional Development Department exists to serve those working directly at the local unites. I like to call them "boots on the ground" as they work directly with people in need.

What has been your favorite experience at the salvation army?

Oh, I have many. As a teenager, it was taking a trip to Canada as part of an International Youth Conference. As an adult, it was being commissioned and ordained a Salvation Army Officer (pastor/administrator) for 15 years. As an employee, working at different Salvation Army corps community centers or Camp Wonderland as Executive or Development Director for 16 years. I have worked for The Salvation Army for 31 Christmas season providing leadership development, resources, and asset sharing to further the mission and ministry of fundraising.

What is one thing you believe the world should know about tsa?

Our mission is internationally over 158 years, and it is to meet basic human needs in Jesus' name without discrimination.

What are a few words you'd use to describe tsa?

Servanthood. Compassionate. Spiritual.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I have a passion for leadership development and organizational capacity building. Recognizing the strengths within each person to make them both a good leader and follower. My doctoral degree is in Ethical Leadership, my master's degree is in Organizational leadership, and my bachelor's degree is in Organizational Management. It wasn't until God called me to each degree did I understand the impact they would have on my life or the desire to share knowledge as a teacher or mentor. I believe I am a natural born leader by nurture (oldest of 4 brothers and 2 sisters). I'm an authentic leader by choice.
