Behind the Shield: Tom Thuecks, Service Extension Director
Tom is the Service Extension Director for The Salvation Army Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Division. In his role, Tom supports the needs of the 67 counties where there is no physical Salvation Army location, but a Service Extension Staff member who can assist people in those areas. Tom is also involved with Disaster Services he ensures people impacted by natural disasters and emergencies like tornados, fire and floods get the assistance to help get them back on their feet. Tom has helped with disasters all over the country and world. He has worked for the organization for over 17 years! Learn more about Tom below:
Q. How did you first learn about Salvation Army?
A. I started attending the Oak Creek Corps in the 80’s.
Q. What is your favorite part about working at Salvation Army?
A. Meeting all different types of people.
Q. What has been your favorite experience at Salvation Army?
A. Working on disaster relief efforts and helping the people in the communities affected by the disaster. He recalls working with people on 9/11 and how difficult it was but in the end it was rewarding. When I was on the site I was the Red Zone Coordinator who oversaw all of The Salvation Army efforts Which included 10 different sites for hydration, food, equipment and supplies for the wellbeing of the emergency personnel.
Q. What is one thing you believe the world should know about Salvation Army?
A. It’s a wonderful organization that is made of integrity
Q. What are 3 words you would use to describe Salvation Army?
A. Integrity, god-led and compassionate.
