Celebrating 140 years of Doing the Most Good
This year marks 140th year anniversary of Lansing Capital Area Salvation Army. It all began in 1884, when The Salvation Army came to downtown Lansing. According to news archives, the arrival caused quite a stir in nearby Mason. On May 8, 1884, the headline on the front-page of the Ingham County News, read “The Salvation Army”. The article went on to say how after three Army officers were spotted and starting singing... “numerous persons crowded about them to learn something of the remarkable organization they represent.”
To honor the anniversary, the organization is holding a series of events beginning in May and ending in late December. The celebration will officially begin May 13 at 12:30 p.m. at Lansing City Hall, when Mayor Andy Schor will read a proclamation declaring it Salvation Army Week.
“For 140 years the Salvation Army has been working with Lansing area residents who need a helping hand. Their work in our community ensures that so many who need assistance get access to food, housing assistance, and other resources,” Schor said. “It is my honor to recognize the Salvation Army of Lansing for the work they do to make our entire community better for everyone.”
