National Salvation Army Week
It’s been 65 years since then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed his name to a proclamation declaring the second full week in May as National Salvation Army Week for our good work being done in communities across the US. While we certainly appreciate the accolades, we have to wonder – what would happen if we all celebrated every week of the year as if it were National Salvation Army Week?
What would happen if we all did something little every day of every week that would improve the life of the less fortunate in our community?
What would happen if we volunteered to work in our local food pantry – helping to provide emergency food assistance for individuals who were unable to put food on the table for their families?
What would happen if we were trained and certified to work in our Emergency Disaster Services Program – ready, willing and able to come alongside people in need by providing hope when there seems to be none.
What would happen if we dug just a little bit deeper in our pockets – and found a way to increase our financial support of Salvation Army programs and services $25 a month?
What wouldhappen? Chances are, we would be changed by the blessings that come from helping others. Chances are, others would be blessed because they received help. Chances are, we could take a cue from President Eisenhower and celebrate the spirit of National Salvation Army Week – more than once a year.
