Krugerrand Craze Continues: Salvation Army's Secret Santa Contributes Rare Coins

Dec 9, 2020

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division is one step closer to its 2020 Red Kettle Campaign goal!

Last night, The Salvation Army’s secret Santa donated two 1984 gold South African Krugerrands to a red kettle at Bay City’s Walmart Supercenter on Wilder Road.

Since 2013, a mysterious (and very generous!) individual has deposited Krugerrands into the red kettle – always around the same time frame somewhere in Bay City.

The Krugerrands, valued at an estimated $1,860 each, will help The Salvation Army provide more than just food and shelter.

Donations go a long way, and consider this:

  • $10 provides a ‘basic needs kit’ to someone in need and can feet one person for a month – $1,450 equals 145 of those kits.
  • $25 provides a coat to keep a child warm this winter – $1,450 equals 58 coats.
  • $50 will assist an emergency disaster victim, such as an individual or family displaced by a fire -- $1,450 will help 29 emergency disaster victims.
  • $75 sends a child to camp -- $1,450 will send 19 kids to camp.
  • $100 provides two weeks of meals for a family of four – that equals out to providing 14 families meals.

For those who don’t have an extra gold Krugerrand lying around in their home, supporters can still donate by:

  • Tapping any red kettle to pay via Apple or Google Pay
  • Donating cash in a red kettle
