We Fight Poverty with Compassion and Action

Our material and financial assistance programs help individuals and families bridge the gap.

We Come Alongside People to Offer Help and Hope.

Poverty can be isolating, and those who suffer often feel alone. We are here to provide community, help and hope.

How We Help Overcome Poverty

We provide both financial and material assistance to individuals and families in need.

Financial Assistance
We help individuals and families financially by providing monetary support to help with an eviction notice, a utility shut off notice, essential prescription assistance, minor car repairs and hotel stays when needed.

Material Assistance
In addition to collaborating with local community partners on a variety of special projects during the year, the Salvation Army of Brookings County also provides the following services:

  • Share the Warmth Project
No one should have to go without a warm coat in a South Dakota winter, which is why we provide new winter coats, as well as snow pants, boots, hats and mittens/gloves to men, women and children in need. Those needing cold weather outerwear are encouraged to attend the one-day Share the Warmth event in the fall. A limited selection of items may be available at our office or Faith Church year-round as well.
  • Back 2 School Project
The cost for new school supplies can strain the budget, especially for parents living paycheck to paycheck. We want every child to have the best chance to excel in school, which is why we partner with the non-profit Back 2 School Project, to help provide a portion of the backpacks given away at the event.

  • Personal Care Packs
Those who are struggling often can’t afford basic necessities. We provide care packs for men, women and children, as well as provide laundry detergent and household cleaning products (when available).
