Dane County Responds to the National Commander’s Bell-Ringing Challenge
Major Melissa Shiels has taken up the gauntlet for a national competition
SUN PRAIRIE (December 2, 2020) – Commissioner Kenneth Hodder, The Salvation Army’s National Commander, has issued a bell-ringing challenge to all officers across the United States in an effort to raise funds necessary to maintain programs and services year-round. With requests for services up 150% while bell-ringing shifts are down 50% of where they were last year, the competition comes at a vital moment in the Red Kettle Campaign.
Participating officers will ring on December 4 for a 4-hour timeframe. The winner and his/her guest will join the National Commander for The Salvation Army National Red Kettle Kickoff at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Game in 2021. In Dane County, Major Melissa Shiels has accepted the challenge and will be ringing bells at the Sun Prairie Walmart from 2-6 PM on Friday, December 4.
“The Dane County community has proven to be generous during the kettle campaign in years past and we know this year, even with its challenges, won’t be any different,” said Major Melissa Shiels. “The real winners in the bell-ringing challenge are the people we serve who will get a warm bed and a hot meal.”
With virtual kettles, text-to-give, and Season Pass Pins, The Salvation Army has expanded the options for giving this year, though there are still many in-person bell-ringing shifts available. The Red Kettle Campaign officially ends at 8 pm on Thursday, December 24.
