Celebrating National Volunteer Week: Vanessa
Tell us about yourself.
I am a flight attendant. I had the privilege of being neighbors with Major Jim Irving for 8 years. He was a good friend and basically my personal pastor for all of that time. Through him, I learned about the great work The Salvation Army does.
What has it been like to help The Salvation Army during the COVID-19 pandemic?
It’s a great reason to get out of the house and have something productive to do. I love being able to do something and help someone. It’s also absolutely tough work. I get a workout when I volunteer in the warehouse, but that’s good – I enjoy being active.
Why do you volunteer for The Salvation Army?
Major Jim Irving is a huge reason why. The Salvation Army is an important organization; it’s a staple in the community for people in need.
How do you feel after volunteering?
Exhausted but fulfilled. I got to do something to help some people out, and I feel proud. It’s important for my kids to see that you should give back.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering for The Salvation Army?
If you’re going to volunteer, be rested before you come in – it’s going to be a busy day! After a shift in the warehouse, everyone is sore from lifting boxes, but you walk out of there with a sense that you did something for somebody else. And that feels good.
Vanessa volunteers to offer relief to so many during these trying times. Thank you for your support! We cannot do this alone. We invite you to find our more if you are interested in volunteering with us.
