Families from the Pathway of Hope Get a 'Holiday Assist' from the Red Wings, Tigers, and Meijer
The Detroit Red Wings and Tigers partnered with The Salvation Army and Meijer this year through the Hometown Holiday Assist to bring an extra helping of Christmas joy to five different families in the Pathway of Hope program. On December 15, 2020, five families were in for the biggest Christmas surprise of their lives as coaches, staff, and players gathered outside their homes with gifts, decorations, food, and gift cards.
“The Salvation Army has enjoyed a long, storied and successful relationship with the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers,” said Major Timothy Meyer, general secretary, metro Detroit area commander and chief operating officer for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “In a year that has been difficult for thousands of metro Detroit families, it’s a blessing to know that there’s individuals in this community, including the amazing folks with the Red Wings and Tigers, who are helping rescue Christmas.”
Through Pathway of Hope, each of the families has made giant strides in breaking out of the cycle of poverty and reaching their goals for a better future. We were overjoyed to bring the blessing of Hometown Holiday Assist right to the door of these families and encourage them to continue the journey toward stability and self-sufficiency. Each family was also able to select an organization to receive an additional $1,000 donation of Hometown Holiday Assist funds.
“The benefits of this initiative extend beyond the gifts and food delivered to each home,” said Kevin Brown, director of community impact for the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers. “True to the spirit of giving and receiving, many additional lives will be positively impacted through the pay-it-forward donations directed by each recipient family to nonprofits near and dear to their hearts.”
We are so grateful for our amazing community partners and the day they were able to give our Pathway of Hope families! If you would like to help us Rescue Christmas for families in need in your community, please donate now.
