From Camper, to Counselor, to Senior: Over 50 years at Echo Grove for Midland camper
Since 1921, thousands of families and individuals have enjoyed the fresh air, camp activities, and unifying ministry at Echo Grove Camp and Retreat Center.
While one may initially think our camp is for children, they may be pleased to learn that Echo Grove offers an overnight Senior Camp for one week during the summer. Throughout the week, campers get to participate in all camp has to offer while growing closer to Christ.
Jim Carrier, member of the Midland Corps since 1965, has been attending camp for over 50 years—first as a child, then as counselor, and now as a senior. Although he has witnessed many changes within the camp over the years, he said one thing has stayed the same: the fellowship.
“My favorite part of camp is the spirit,” he expressed. “It's often screaming, singing, and worshiping together all because we have love to say, because we love God. That’s what's good for me. That hasn’t changed a bit.”
Not only do the campers share a love of God, but they also share a love of connecting with one another and building friendships during their camping experience—even if it doesn’t seem easy as first.
“Building relationships here is so easy to do,” he said. “Everybody is so friendly and wants to get along. When I first got here on Monday, I felt down because I didn't know any of the guys in the cabin. But looking back at my memories, I knew it was going to be a good camp and I just had to make that effort to reach out to people. And in the end, it's all about the people connection. That's really what I see.”
Although senior camp is over for the year, children of all ages will be attending Echo Grove all summer, and the greatest need is camper scholarships. $125 will help send a kid to camp – including transportation, lodging, food, and supplies – for a week of life-changing fun.
