Krugerrand Craze Continues: Rare Coins Donated to Red Kettles Across the Eastern Michigan Division

Dec 9, 2020

These two 1984 South African Krugerrands pictured above were donated to the Bay City Red Kettle.

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division is one step closer to its 2020 Red Kettle Campaign goal!

Over the weekend, The Salvation Army’s secret Santa donated two 1984 gold South African Krugerrands to a red kettle at Bay City’s Walmart Supercenter on Wilder Road, and one 1980 Krugerrand to the St. Clair Shores Kroger red kettle at 23191 Marter Road.

Since 2013, mysterious (and very generous!) individuals have deposited Krugerrands into the red kettle – always around the same time frame, both in metro Detroit and around the Eastern Michigan Division.

The 1984 Krugerrands, valued at an estimated $1,860 each, and the 1980 Krugerrand, valued at an estimated $2,030, will help The Salvation Army provide more than just food and shelter.

Donations go a long way, especially a Krugerrand valued at around $2,000. Consider this:

  • $10 provides a ‘basic needs kit’ to someone in need and can feet one person for a month – $2,000 equals 200 of those kits.
  • $25 provides a coat to keep a child warm this winter – $2,000 equals 80 coats.
  • $50 will assist an emergency disaster victim, such as an individual or family displaced by a fire -- $2,000 will help 40 emergency disaster victims.
  • $75 sends a child to camp -- $2,000 will send 26 kids to camp.
  • $100 provides two weeks of meals for a family of four – that equals out to providing 20 families meals.

For those who don’t have an extra gold Krugerrand lying around in their home, supporters can still donate by:

  • Tapping any red kettle to pay via Apple or Google Pay
  • Donating cash in a red kettle
  • Visiting salmich.org
  • Calling 877-SAL-MICH
