Volunteering as a Salvation Army Red Kettle Bell Ringer

Nov 7, 2018

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is about to launch the 2018 Red Kettle campaign. The nonprofit organization is asking the community for its support by volunteering as a red kettle bell ringer to help meet its $8.2 million fundraising goal.

Every red kettle that has a volunteer increases the chances of hitting the campaign goal. To date, metro Detroiters have already signed up for nearly 3,500 volunteer bell ringer hours, but there are still more than 80,000 hours yet to be filled.

“Volunteer bell ringers are the lifeblood of The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign,” says Major Russ Sjögren, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “Kettle donations account for nearly one-third of money raised during the holidays, and every unmanned red kettle can severely impact progress toward our goal of raising $8.2 million.”

Those interested in donating their time for a good cause should visit ringbell.org or salmich.org/volunteer and sign up for shifts. The site allows visitors to choose from any city and date range and select the shift that works best for their schedule. Shifts are two hours apiece, although many choose to ring longer. For example, families and businesses often reserve a large block of time and split it amongst their members.

Funds collected in the red kettles stay in the community to support programs and services for families and individuals throughout metro Detroit, including more than 2.5 million meals and more than 622,000 nights of shelter each year. The Salvation Army is more than a red a kettle; donations help ensure The Salvation Army can continue providing after school programs, emergency disaster services, substance abuse treatment, free legal aid, and other vital services in the coming year as well.
