A Black History Reflection with Dr. Alicia Hoskins

Feb 28, 2025

For Dr. Alicia Hoskins, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, Black History Month is far more than a designated 28-day observance, it’s a deeply personal and purposeful time of reflection.

“It’s a moment to understand and recognize the trials while also acknowledging and celebrating the triumphs. Black history is American history,” explained Dr. Hoskins.

Black history is American history. It is shared, lived, and deeply woven into the fabric of who we are. Dr. Hoskins believes the month of February is a moment for truth sometimes painful, often uncomfortable; but always powerful.

“I do not view Black History Month as a time for Black people alone, but as a time for all people to listen, learn, and be inspired by the ingenuity, perseverance, and brilliance that have emerged from the Black experience,” said Dr. Hoskins.

Her heritage has deeply influence not just who she is but how she leads. Dr. Hoskins comes from a legacy of resilience; her mother and grandmother picked cotton in Mississippi working tirelessly every day. Their pain and perseverance are etched into her family’s story.

Faith is also a cornerstone of her and her family’s journey. Her mother, a pastor and her father’s disciplined examples built a spiritual and emotional foundation that guides her every step

“I make plans… and God laughs… however, I ultimately only want to do what He sees fit for my life,” she says with humility. “The numerous examples of resilience within my culture continue to inspire me against insurmountable odds, and I take this same approach to help rally my teams, uplift our clients, and advocate to our stakeholders.”

Dr. Hoskins believes that organizations like The Salvation Army can—and must—continue to uplift and amplify Black voices through intentional platforms and inclusive practices.

“I believe it’s important that there are platforms for all voices to be heard,” she shares. “Town Halls can be provided. Committees can be developed. Periodically, we could create face-to-face moments as a Division/Territory to collectively listen, collaborate, and ignite positive and effective change for our staff and community.”

Dr. Hoskins is choosing to lead with empathy, courage, and conviction. She’s using her time to honor the past, serve the present, and build toward a more inclusive and empowered future—for all.
