The Salvation Army Heartland Division Sets Out to “Rescue Christmas”

Due to Immense Impact of COVID-19

In Central Illinois & Eastern Iowa, as well as all across the nation, The Salvation Army has launched the iconic holiday fundraising campaign earlier than ever to meet increasing need. For the first time in 130 years, The Salvation Army is starting its annual holiday fundraising campaign early across the country in order to rescue Christmas. The funds raised through our iconic red kettles are at risk this year due to COVID-19 while requests for services are at an all-time high.

Based on the increase in services already provided in response to the pandemic, we could serve up to 155% more people in 2020 with Christmas assistance, including:

  • Helping to feed those facing food insecurity or hunger
  • Paying bills or offering short term emergency financial assistance
  • Providing shelter & protection for those facing homelessness or in need of winter clothing
  • Helping place gifts under the tree for families who are unable to make this Holiday Season special

Across the Heartland Division, countless people were met last Christmas. This year however, the closing of retail stores, consumers carrying less cash and coins, and the decline in foot traffic, could cause up to a 50% decrease in funds raised through the symbolic Red Kettles. This would limit the capability to provide these life-changing services during a year where there is more need than ever before. This is why local support from communities members is critical to our mission's success.

Since March, The Salvation Army Heartland Division has provided more than 500,000 meals, 14,000 nights of safe shelter and $400,000 of financial assistance. Now more than ever, it is safer and simpler to support the most vulnerable in your community. Look below to see how you can join The Salvation Army in Rescuing Christmas this year.
