Experience Nature in New Ways

May 23, 2023

Summer break should be a time for students to enjoy the warm weather and to spend time with friends. For many, this time is spent indoors bombarded by cell phone screens and video games. Every summer, The Salvation Army steps in bringing Hidden Falls Camp to life as children from across the state travel to Bedford, Indiana. The 706-acre retreat provides hundreds of campers with the opportunity to meet new friends, experience the outdoors, and learn about God. However, for one week this summer, these youth will take their camping experience to new heights. The Salvation Army Outdoors (TSAO) camp is a completely outdoor survival experience where campers will trade the usual cabin for a tent.

This July, TSAO camp will make its return for the first time in four years. 40 Hoosier children ages 13-17 will have the opportunity to appreciate God’s creation in new ways as they participate in activities such as riflery, hike the camp’s beautiful trail system, and even learn how to cook over a campfire all while sleeping under the stars. Captain Tony Bowers, Divisional Youth Secretary and Camp Administrator, is excited to offer this exclusively outdoor experience as a ministry to local youth.

“TSAO camp not only allows us to take the camp experience to a whole new level, but we’re able to truly minister to the campers,” he explained. “Being outdoors limits distractions of technology and today’s society, putting the focus on God, His creation, and fellowship with one another.”

With each camp at Hidden Falls, the administration spends much time creating new curriculum that will meet the spiritual needs of today’s youth. Though Hidden Falls Camp is hosting a variety of themed weeks such as STEM, sports, and creative arts, Captain Tony is most looking forward to watching how TSAO camp will impact campers.

“Together, we will learn, work and, play,” he explained. “All the while, the kids will see the value of community, teamwork, and friendships.” Thanks to the support that you give The Salvation Army, we can help create memories that will last a lifetime for local children.
