Gold Nugget Donated to The Salvation Army Last Christmas Going to Auction
The gold nugget that got national attention when it was delivered to one of The Salvation Army's Red Kettles last December is going up for auction through Heritage Auctions. Originally donated to The Salvation Army of Southern Indiana's bell ringing team during the annual National Commander's Red Kettle Challenge on December 14, 2024, the anonymous gift helped the New Albany team place second nationally in the annual competition.
Bidding opens for the 2025 April 23 Nature & Science Signature® Auction #8208 on April 2 and closes on April 23. The nugget's unique form and place of origin, Australia, is expected to bring a much higher price at auction than the market value for the 15.52 ozt. (troy ounces) of gold it contains. “This gold nugget was certainly a wonderful surprise this past Christmas season!" said Captain Kory Strand with The Salvation Army. "Now that it is headed for auction, we are excitedly anticipating what it could bring in. As needs continue for so many, we are honored to walk through life with the people in our communities who need support. The money raised will help us as we provide hope in the way of food, rent and utility assistance, childcare, and Christmas gifts for those in need throughout Southern Indiana!”
This auction is expected to bring in bidders from around the world with spectacular fossils, meteorites, gemstones, and an exceptionally rare 145.34 troy ounce gold nugget. Learn more about Heritage Auctions at ha.com.
