Hometown Heroes

Oct 2, 2018 | by Katherine Basaran

Last month, The Salvation Army Indiana Division celebrated the creation of the new Miami County Hometown Heroes Endowment Fund.  Volunteers and donors gathered at the Parkview United Methodist Parsonage on September 15th to kick off this new endowment.

Hometown Hero Endowment funds are one of the best ways to make a long-term impact in our communities. The purpose of the fund is to enhance and support the mission and ministry locally, in this case in Miami County, Indiana.  The interest earned by the funds provides stability and growth for the life-changing and life-saving programs provided by The Salvation Army.

During the kick-off event, attendees worked together to create 200 blessing bags for the children of Miami County.  The blessing bags included a handmade blanket, a book, pajamas, and slippers. These special gifts will be given to children in the area during the local Angel Tree Christmas program that takes place annually.

“Stuffing the bags was lots of fun,” volunteer Sharon Breitenbach said with a smile.  “I loved picking out cute items for the bags, and knowing that it is helping children that might not get that much for Christmas is a wonderful feeling. I am also an attorney, so this endowment fund is a great option for my clients as they pick out their will to be able to give back to their community and support The Salvation Army.”

This endowment fund will enable The Salvation Army to keep operating in the community, and continue offering programs like Angel Tree.  Bette Thompson, the Pastor of Parkview United Methodist Church, where the event was held, explained that the partnership between the two churches has been a great so far. “The Salvation Army sees people from the community on a day to day basis here; they have a food pantry, offer financial assistance, and are open throughout the week to serve people.  We are happy to provide the space they need to offer these services.”

The Salvation Army is celebrating this new endowment, and the ability to serve Miami County for years to come.  Please consider donating a gift of cash, stocks, mutual funds, life insurance, or include us as a beneficiary through your will or trust and enable us continue Doing The Most Good in Indiana.
