New in Town

May 27, 2024

Hank and Charlotte were newcomers to Indiana last fall when they moved to Dearborn County to be closer to family. Originally from Tennessee, they quickly fell in love with their new southern Indiana community and the “Hoosier hospitality” that felt like home.

Unfortunately for the family of four, the move had proved more expensive than anticipated and they quickly saw their savings disappear due to their first month of rent and deposit, utility deposits, and moving costs. Hank had secured a new job that would start soon, but he had no way to pay for gas to get to and from work until he received his first paycheck. With two children at home, the couple feared what might happen if they couldn’t find a solution before Hank’s first day on the job.

That’s when Hank and Charlotte learned from their new neighbor that The Salvation Army might be able to help. Hank set up an appointment with Kimberly Henry, a Salvation Army volunteer who works out of the Southern Indiana Economic Opportunity Corporation (SIEOC) office in Aurora. Using Salvation Army funds, Kimberly secured a $50 gas card to get Hank to work and then worked to get him connected to other community resources that would help with energy assistance, childcare, and Medicaid.

“Because of Salvation Army funding, this gentleman was able to start his job in November,” Kimberly was happy to share. “He also followed up with the other referrals given to him and was able to secure other assistance to help his family get established in their new community.”

Hank and Charlotte are now in a stable situation and are enjoying being active members of their new community. By supporting The Salvation Army, you are giving people like Hank and Charlotte a brighter start here in Indiana. On behalf of this family and thousands more like them across the state, thank you!
