Spring Fling

Mar 22, 2022

Spring was in the air on Wednesday as older adults from across Indiana came together for The Salvation Army Indiana Division's "Spring Fling" in Indianapolis. More than seventy seniors enjoyed fellowship, live entertainment, and games at The Salvation Army's Eagle Creek Corps Community center on the city's west side.

The pandemic has increased social isolation among older Hoosiers, but with the cases waning in Indiana, seniors are feeling more comfortable gathering together as they once did. Safety precautions were still in place at the Spring Fling, though, with social distancing, individual boxed meals, and the option to wear a mask.

This event was part of a larger outreach effort, inviting seniors into a place where they could socialize and learn about resources that could help them be a part of their local The Salvation Army's many programs and ministries. Across the state, adults enjoy spending time at their local Salvation Army in men's and women's groups, weekly Bible studies, fun social events. Older adults also meet up each year at The Salvation Army's Hidden Falls Camp in southern Indiana for the annual Women's Retreat and Older Adult Retreat.

"The Spring Fling was filled with moments of joy," shared Major Nancy Mead, who oversees older adult ministries in the Indiana Division. "New friendships and relationships were made at this gathering. There is nothing better then seeing people connect and enjoy the fellowship that God has intended for us."

The 2022 Spring Fling theme was "The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party: Celebrate God’s Goodness through Friendship." Familiar characters filled the gymnasium at the Eagle Creek corps, with the Queen of Hearts (Major Nancy Mead) leading the way and Alice and the Cheshire Cat playing games with the audience. The White Rabbit shared about friendship between people and between God and a believer. Special guests at the Spring Fling were Majors Angelo and Virginia Bermeo. They are illusionists and put on an exciting show using animals like doves and poodles, much to the delight of attendees.

What a wonderful way to spend a bright and sunny March day!

Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God’s presence.
