2023 Angel Tree Gift Shopping

Nov 9, 2023

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program ensures that thousands of children and their families have a happy and special Christmas in our community each year.

Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time. Angel Tree serves millions of children throughout the U.S. each year.

Here in St. Louis, The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary, officers and staff went shopping for toys and gifts for girls and boys at Walmart in Kirkwood this week.

This year, over 5,000 angels will be adopted in our community, with each of those children having a unique Christmas wish list. Through our community's kindness, we can ensure that each of those children receives those much-desired gifts and toys.

“Angel Tree is an important part of our programs and a real highlight of the Tree of Lights each year,” said Major Deannie Moore. “As we celebrate our love for Jesus, we celebrate our love of community, and of course, the children are such a special part of that.”

With action figures, basketballs, clothes, and shoes all high on Angel’s wish lists, there’s much individual shopping to do. The Women’s Auxiliary Group ladies have been assisting with the shopping as they do every year.”

“It’s a special feeling knowing that our community is helping children and families to enjoy Christmas and to feel remembered and loved,” said Angel Tree Coordinator Lauren Shelton. “We all know how much Christmas means to children and families, and thanks to our community’s kindness, we can ensure they all feel loved at this special time of the year.”

“It’s a privilege to be part of this special project,” said Ruth Carr, President of The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary Group in St. Louis. “It means so much to us all to know that we are helping to share kindness and love with children and their families. It brings the ladies great joy to know that we are helping to spread a little joy at Christmas.”
