A Journey to Empowerment: Brittany's Triumph with The Salvation Army

Feb 29, 2024

In the heart of St. Louis, Missouri, Brittany faced life's harsh realities head-on.

As a mother of two boys, and suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and anxiety, Brittany’s return to St. Louis marked the beginning of an unforeseen struggle. Amidst the unpredictability, The Salvation Army and its Pathway of Hope program emerged as a beacon of positivity. This story focuses on Brittany's transformative journey from struggling to find hope to a place of empowerment.

Brittany's narrative is a testament to resilience, the power of community, and the unwavering support that paves the way to a brighter future.

The following testimony comes from a conversation with Brittany as she recalled her experiences and journey with The Salvation Army:

My name is Brittany. I'm 34 years old, and I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. I have two children, an eight-year-old and a 10-year-old boy. Both are boys.

Growing up in St. Louis was a challenging experience for me. I relocated to San Diego to try living there but ended up coming back home. That’s when things turned into a shambles for me.

Trying to readjust to life again in St. Louis with my children was very difficult for me. I was and am still going through PTSD, and I’ve suffered from anxiety for a long time now.

Trying to be a single mother of two kids is challenging for anyone, and knowing where I could turn to for help was a real challenge for me. I’m not someone who is used to asking for help, and I think a lot of people struggle with asking for the help they need.

A friend introduced me to the Ferguson Community Empowerment Center, where I connected with my now case manager, Jazmin.

I was nervous at first, but Jasmine put me at ease. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

Jazmin has helped me make sense of things and helped me to turn my life around, for me and my kids. The Salvation Army welcomed me with open arms right from the start. I don’t know why I was so nervous about getting help!

When I first met Jazmin, I was officially homeless, I had literally nowhere to go. Jazmin helped me to find a place to stay, and it’s amazing! She helped me to tackle some big issues in my life, like managing my money and managing my priorities. I felt my depression lift from me almost immediately because of her help. I can see a way forward now in life and it’s all thanks to The Salvation Army. I’m saving money to help me achieve my goals and to make a better life for me and for my children.

My life now isn’t perfect, but I’m excited about the future. Just knowing that I have a support team behind me that can help me keep going. Even on days when I feel like giving up, I know I can make it to the next day. We all need support. I would encourage anyone who needs help to reach out. You have nothing to fear, and you never know how beautiful life can be. Reach out today, be brave, and believe in better.

Brittany's story is more than a personal success; it's a testament to how targeted support and genuine compassion can uplift individuals from hardship to self-reliance and optimism. Her journey is a reminder that with courage and the right support, overcoming adversity is not just a possibility but a certainty. As Brittany looks to the future with excitement, her story stands as a beacon of hope for others.
