Emergency Disaster Services Adds New Canteen to Fleet
The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) unit is excited to be adding another canteen to its fleet of nearly 10 vehicles across Missouri and Southern Illinois.
The new canteen, which arrived in St. Louis in November, includes enhanced features such as electronic/battery-powered devices for food and beverage service and Starlink access for critical communications. Because Salvation Army canteens often include ovens, refrigerators, power and water, these mobile feeding units are prepared to serve hundreds and thousands of meals at events and in times of crisis. It’s first date of service in the field was Dec. 7.
The Salvation Army National Headquarters funded the procurement of the canteen via a grant.
In Missouri and Southern Illinois, disasters most often come in the form of tornadoes, flooding or home fires/explosions, though service is extended to those experiencing homelessness or impacted by extreme temperatures. It is the duty of EDS volunteers to act swiftly in serving the community and giving hope to those in need, beyond their most immediate needs. Donations to Emergency Disaster Services can be made online. In addition, individuals interested in volunteering with EDS can do so online.
For over 120 years, The Salvation Army has been offering assistance to disaster survivors.
