Empowerment Through Service: Easterseals Volunteers with The Salvation Army

Apr 1, 2024

At Easterseals Midwest, they are leading the way to 100% equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities, their families, and our communities. Every year, they provide support to nearly 6,500 individuals across Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri through their life-changing Autism, Community Living, Employment, and Early Childhood programs.

Easterseals Midwest volunteers have been actively contributing to The Salvation Army in St. Louis for many years by participating in activities and initiatives at several of our corps community centers.

Our Communications Manager, Jamie McGeechan, spent time with Easterseals Midwest volunteers at The Salvation Army Gateway Citadel Corps to learn more about their efforts and contributions.

What do you enjoy the most about volunteering with Easterseals Midwest?

John H: “I love helping with Easterseals. It’s good fun! I love tidying the tables in the chapel, the chairs in the classrooms, and taking out the trash.”

Corey C: “I enjoy keeping the pantry stocked full of food. Today, we are going to do some cleaning and tidying. I like doing these things as I know it’s helpful.”

Chris H: “I like to mop, and being here is a lot of fun. We are very busy with our tasks.”

How did you get involved with Easterseals Midwest?

John H: “A family member introduced me to Easterseals. Since then, I’ve been doing lots of interesting things, and we always have a good time helping.”

Chris: “My dad told me about Easterseals. After graduation, I wanted to do something. So, my dad suggested I should get involved.

How has volunteering with Easterseals Midwest impacted you? Do you feel more confident now?

John H: “When we work together, we are happy. It’s important that we work and try to improve the lives of others. I really love that feeling!”

Majorie, Easterseals Midwest Leader: “Our volunteers all work very hard to help others. Easterseals Midwest has been active here at Gateway Citadel for over six years. We aim to help develop self-confidence, socialization skills, job skills, and so much more. We love the partnership we have with The Salvation Army. Working together, we help to strengthen our community, and that’s important.
