Ozzie Smith and Yolonda Lankford – Why we support The Salvation Army

Ozzie Smith and Yolonda Lankford are one of St. Louis’ most beloved couples. Highly supportive of their community, and widely respected within it, Ozzie and Yolonda are passionate about Doing the Most Good. The Salvation Army is delighted to have Ozzie and Yolonda as co-chairs for the Tree of Lights campaign in 2023.

As one of the most successful and most popular baseball players of all time, Ozzie Smith played shortstop for the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball, winning the National League Gold Glove Award for defensive play at shortstop for 13 consecutive seasons. Ozzie, passionate about supporting the community, has for decades, been involved with community events, initiatives and non-profits in St. Louis.

Yolonda Lankford, one of St. Louis’ most respected and admired figures is a philanthropist, community leader and highly sought after keynote speaker and event and TV host. Yolonda has received various awards including an Oprah Winfrey Angel Award, voted one of St. Louis’s Most Magnetic Personalities by St. Louis Magazine, and she is the recipient of the National Council of Negro Women Legacy Award.

Ozzie and Yolonda joined Major Adam Moore, St. Louis Metro Area Commander on FOX 2’s Studio STL show on November 30. The show host, Chelsea Haynes, herself a passionate supporter of The Salvation Army asked Ozzie and Yolonda what it means to them to be involved with The Salvation Army.

Yolonda: I was emceeing an event for The Salvation Army, and I fell in love with the mission and was so impressed with the resources that they provide.

Ozzie: It’s such a great cause! Being able to be part of this is so special for us. It’s always great for us to be able to go out and meet all the people!

Chelsea Haynes: What does it mean to you to be co-chairs for The Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights campaign this year?

Yolonda: It’s a true honor. When you are able to stand in front of your community and they support the things that you do and you’re able to help in the community, it’s definitely an honor! We’ll be ringing the bells this Christmas! “

This year, Ozzie and Yolonda have their very own virtual kettle for the Tree of Lights.

The Salvation Army has a goal of $7.2 million for the Tree of Lights campaign this year. The funds raised will support thousands of people in need in our community throughout the year. Every dollar raised will change lives in our community, providing food, clothing and shelter and supporting The Salvation Army’s wide range of social programs and initiatives including Veterans Residence, Midtown Service and Treatment Center and the Ferguson Community Empowerment Center.
