WOMEN’S AUXILIARY ANNUAL HISTORIC TEA PARTY, SEEKING NEW MEMBERS

Apr 15, 2022

The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary continues its annual tradition of a tea gathering on April 20, with a historian and her husband play Henry VIII and one of his wives for live entertainment.

The hourlong program starts at 1 p.m. at the Salvation Army Gateway Citadel Corps Community Center (824 Union Rd. in St. Louis), with the tea, lemonade and cookies free about 30 minutes leading up to the show. It costs $10 at the door, as does an annual membership to the Women’s Auxiliary.

The historian, Barbara Kay, dresses as historical people in her presentations, with past turns as Mary Todd Lincoln and a World War II-era singalong, in which she wore her father’s Army uniform.

About 80 people attended the tea last year, which was held at the Salvation Army’s office on Hampton Ave.

“This year, [Barbara’s] going to do ‘Henry VIII,’ where he kills six wives,” Barb Williams, treasurer of the Women’s Auxiliary, said. “I have heard it’s hilarious. She and her husband do it together. I’m sure her husband is Henry VIII.”

The Women’s Auxiliary is seeking new members, should ladies be interested.

“It’s a great opportunity for women who just retired,” Williams said. “They’re looking for something to do. We need a way to contact ladies who are – usually, we get ladies who just retired, regardless of age. Some retire at 50, some retire at 75. That doesn’t matter.”

Weekly meetings, a bingo event this fall, the tea fundraiser, a Christmas boutique, and help with holiday gifts are some of the Women’s Auxiliary activities.

Ladies interested in Women's Auxiliary membership should contact Barb Williams at mirl@att.net.
