NATIONAL DONUT DAY MADE POSSIBLE BY THE SALVATION ARMY

Jun 5, 2024

In celebration of National Donut Day on Friday, June 7, The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command is excited to host its 4th Annual Donut Hole Eating Competition at The Kroc Center on Thursday, June 6, at 10 AM. The event will feature friendly competition among members of The Salvation Army and Kroc Center staff.

The festivities continue the following day as The Salvation Army brings joy and gratitude to veterans with a Donut Day presentation for Illinois Veterans Home residents at Hammond Hall (8th & Sycamore) beginning at 10am. The presentation will include a look at the history behind Donut Day and music from The Salvation Army brass band. The State of Illinois VFW Auxiliary is also providing donuts for all residents of the Illinois Veterans Home that morning.

"National Donut Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to honor and show our appreciation to the veterans who have given so much for our country," said Matt Schmidt, Development Director. "Sharing a simple donut with these heroes is our way of saying thank you and recognizing their incredible service and sacrifice."

National Donut Day was established by The Salvation Army on the first Friday of June in 1938. This tradition honors The Salvation Army Donut Lassies, who provided donuts to soldiers on the front lines during World War I. The Salvation Army continued this tradition of comfort and care through World War II and beyond, ensuring that American soldiers received a taste of home even in the toughest times.
