Dave Graduates The Salvation Army Harbor House

Mar 25, 2022

After two months of living in his van and having nowhere else to turn, Dave came to The Salvation Army Harbor House and spoke to our staff about entering our program. The weather had begun to get colder, and he was desperate for someone to give him a chance to get back on his feet. He was hoping to only need to be in our program for a short time until he could address some of his needs.

He was actively involved at Hope Church and continued to attend various Bible studies. Dave settled into a routine at Harbor House and began to open up to the staff as he built trust with them. He would regularly pray over the facility, staff, and residents alike and enjoyed engaging the staff in spiritual conversations. Many times, Dave would be found to be praying over his chores and continually thanking God. When our case manager asked him one day what he was thanking God for, he replied, “The ability to be here doing my chore”.

Often, Dave would encourage others around him to be involved in their church, to join him, or to be involved in Celebrate Recovery, a program to help those who struggle with hurt, pain, or addiction of any kind. He strived in all he did to reflect the love of Jesus. He also started helping his church by joining them in local mission opportunities.

During his intake, Dave reported he was working part-time at one of the local Price Cutters. This income was crucial as it supplemented his disability benefits.

While staying at the Harbor House, he took on more hours at work and began to save his money, saving over $3,000. In addition to keeping his job and saving money, Dave was able to successfully find and move into his own housing!

After three months in our program, Dave was proud to receive a certificate of program completion. His excitement and joy radiated from his face. As he was leaving our building, he could be heard thanking God once more for Harbor House.

Dave was a delight, a joy, and a blessing to have at The Salvation Army. He gave our staff this reminder:  All that we do here at The Salvation Army is for the glory of God and to further his kingdom.

We can’t wait to hear back from Dave to see what God is still doing in his life!
