Bringing Hope and Help in the Midst of COVID-19

Mar 23, 2020

With a presence in almost every ZIP code in America, The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to respond to the unique needs of people living in poverty. These challenges are exponentially magnified during times of crisis, including pandemics like coronavirus (COVID-19). Across the United States, we are stepping up to the challenge and continue to serve the most vulnerable populations in each community. This is just one of many stories of how we are meeting the needs of those who rely on The Salvation Army during difficult times.

From Captains Brian and Katrina Goodwill:

One thing we’ve been doing these past couple of days is visiting our corps members and bringing them a small care package basket that includes some fruit, jelly beans, chocolate, War Cry, a puzzle book, a list of prayer requests we have for all of the church members, a world-services envelope, a bubble wand, blank note cards with envelopes, a list of spiritual care resources (Christian radio stations, how to stream Royal Oak or Flint’s service, etc.), and some Lenten readings with questions based on the sermon series I would have been preaching. Since we only have about 14 families in our congregation, Katrina and I sort of split up with one of us visiting those who live in town, while the other visited those who live further away in the county.

For food distribution, we are working with the public schools as a meal distribution site. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, families come and are served breakfast and lunch. We have been using this opportunity to talk to the families while they wait about what they’re experiencing and going through, and how everyone is holding up. Many of these families are involved in our youth programs in different ways, so it’s good to provide some spiritual care in the parking lot. We’ve also let them know that our own food pantry is still open and available if they need additional meals.

If you need help or want to give help, find your local Corps Community Center and get connected! You can also make a donation to support our work in your community.
