Salvation Army helps Berrien, Cass families with Christmas Assistance
The Salvation Army of Niles served about 300 families in southeast Berrien and Cass counties with Christmas assistance this season.
Some 700 children received toys along with books, stocking stuffers, and 35 bikes.
There were also pieces of clothing given to families and handmade blankets and hats and gloves. 115 Teenagers received a gift and a $25 gift card. Every family received a ham and a $25 gift card for food.
Several parents were overcome with emotion as they walked through the toy shop, choosing what their children would like. One woman said she would be able to give her children Christmas, while another woman broke into tears saying she didn’t know how she was going to buy food and presents for her children.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to serve our community in this way," said Corps Officer Major Jodi Montgomery. "We are also thankful for our donors and partnerships with Toys For Tots and St. John’s Church, who allow us to use their building to do our toy shop.”
