A Break from Hunger, a Path to Hope
Last summer, a homeless couple faced a conundrum. They needed time to look for jobs and affordable housing, but had nowhere to leave their three children while they did so and no money to pay for daycare. Thankfully, they found The Salvation Army’s Freedom Center in West Humboldt Park.
Through the generous donations of Salvation Army supporters, the Freedom Center staff was able to give the children scholarships to attend their summer camp free of charge. At camp each day, the children enjoyed breakfast and lunch, a welcome relief from the usual uncertainty about where their next meal would come from.
Besides getting their physical needs met, the children also savored the spiritual enrichment at camp. “They had never heard Bible stories or that Jesus loved them,” said the Freedom Center’s Major Nancy Powers. “In time, they asked Jesus to come into their hearts.”
While the kids were in summer camp, both of their parents found employment and they located an apartment they could afford. The family moved into their new home right after the last week of camp.
We are grateful to our generous Salvation Army friends who know that helping children helps entire families.
