A long walk for Christmas
How far would you walk to see your kids smile on Christmas? That was the question a single mom faced on a cold, snowy day in December.
Theresa, a single mother of four living in the Des Plaines area, had an appointment to shop at The Salvation Army Des Plaines toy shop. It was her only opportunity to get Christmas presents for her children.
Without a car, bus money, or anyone to give her a ride, Theresa was left with one option: walk.
With her baby strapped to her chest, Theresa walked six miles in the snow to ensure she made her appointment on time. The Salvation Army was able to meet Theresa’s need and sent her home with four bags of toys, diapers, and food.
Amongst the many toys were Legos, robots, Barbies, Hot Wheels, and even a bike. Upon learning of the lengths she went to, Salvation Army Des Plaines Corps Officer Lt. Maximiliano Franchetti decided to give her, her baby, and her bundle of Christmas necessities, a ride home to keep her from having to make the cold walk back.
While Theresa walked the furthest, unfortunately, her story is not unique. There were many other parents, equally determined to provide Christmas presents for their kids, who had to walk to do their Christmas shopping.
Despite limited resources, The Salvation Army works to meet the full scope of client need.
Your donation can help provide them with the means for a perfect holiday and the means to get there and back safe and warm.
