Amy Grant and Kevin Warren Highlight The Salvation Army’s Annual Civic Luncheon

May 8, 2025

The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division hosted its much-anticipated Annual Civic Luncheon on May 8th, and once again, it did not disappoint. Held in the iconic Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier, the event drew over 500 guests for an unforgettable day of food, fun, and fellowship.

Chicago Bears Football Club President and CEO Kevin Warren was the Keynote Speaker, and his interview with Chicago Area Commander Major Caleb Senn did not disappoint. The 20-minute conversation delved into Warren’s journey and admiration for The Salvation Army’s mission.

“I challenge all of us to do more,” Warren said. “This is a natural partnership… I would challenge The Salvation Army; I would challenge everyone here from the Chicago Bears organization to do more – let’s make the coat drive bigger, let’s make the turkey giveaway bigger, let’s help more people. We just need to do more.”

Warren not only talked about faith and philanthropy but also gave insight into the future of the Chicago Bears – both on and off the field.

“What a new stadium does – its much bigger than a building. It really becomes an epicenter for economic activity. It creates jobs, it gives people hope, it brings people together,” Warren said. “I think one of the things we need to do is build something everyone can benefit from, and it will be a gamechanger with a heartbeat and a pulse.”

Another highlight was the 30-minute concert by six-time Grammy Award-winning artist Amy Grant, which concluded with a standing ovation. When she was done on stage, Amy stayed and enjoyed lunch with 500 of her newest friends.

Grant also shared touching moments with VIPs before taking the stage, offering a personal glimpse into her commitment to giving back. For those who met her, it was a memorable encounter with one of music’s most genuine stars.

This annual celebration is more than just a gathering—it’s a powerful testament to the incredible work done by The Salvation Army throughout the year. It’s also a time to honor the prestigious William Booth and Others Award recipients.

They are individuals and organizations who embody the spirit of Salvation Army founder William Booth by putting others first. This year, the spotlight shone brightly on Chicago Advisory Board member Ernest Sawyer, recipient of the Others Award. From the Chicago Transit Authority to ERS Enterprises, Ernest has spent decades helping guide the city’s focus on urban development. His leadership in bringing the Kroc Center to Chicago makes him a Salvation Army treasure.

WGN Radio and John Williams received the William Booth Award, recognizing his years of support on the radio in both Peoria and Chicago. In his heartfelt acceptance speech, John humorously stated, “No wonder (the officers) are always smiling, from the most dire of circumstances, The Salvation Army always projects happiness in their efforts – optimism,  positivity, Christianity, forgiveness… trombones.”

Longtime NBC reporter Phil Rogers emceed the event, and his connection to The Salvation Army added a special touch. Phil’s engaging presence and anecdotes captivated the audience, underscoring his deep-rooted relationship with The Salvation Army.

The celebration continued with the presentation of a generous $356,000 check from Jewel-Osco, the result of the February register donation event. The funds will provide crucial support to thousands of families across the division. Jewel-Osco’s Director of Communications, Public Affairs & Government Relations, Mary Frances Trucco, handed over the giant check to Lt. Colonel Jonathan Rich amidst thunderous applause.

As the largest single fundraising event of the year for The Salvation Army, the Civic Luncheon’s impact is immense. The funds raised support more than fifty critical programs, ensuring that The Salvation Army can continue its mission of Doing the Most Good.
