Get Involved During National Volunteer Month

Apr 1, 2024

April is National Volunteer Month in the United States. This is a special time to recognize all those who selflessly assist organizations throughout the year. The Salvation Army Central Territory relies on volunteers to provide extra hands, knowledge, and skills that support life-changing programs and services for people in need throughout the Midwest.

For some families, the baton of volunteerism is handed down from one generation to another. Whether through bell ringing at Christmastime, restocking food pantry shelves, or getting involved in the music ministry, there are many ways to instill this important character trait in children at an early age. Our Salvation Army locations cite a deep commitment to the community and love for others as the main reasons people roll up their sleeves and work alongside us.

Additionally, helping others improves people’s health and happiness. It’s an opportunity to make new friends with similar interests and feel good about themselves. By working towards a common goal, volunteers at The Salvation Army shake feelings of loneliness or isolation and create a more positive view of their own life. This results in a desire to ease the suffering of others and creates a positive feedback loop.

Over time, the volunteer opportunities we offer make a significant impact on individuals, families, and the neighborhoods in which we are located. We bring people together through service, so they feel more connected, reduce their stress or depression, and provide them with a sense of purpose. All this is accomplished while easing the suffering of others.

Studies show the more frequently people volunteer, the more benefits they experience. But keep in mind that volunteering at The Salvation Army doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment. Whether you only have a few hours a year to give, or plan to set aside time each month…we can you find a role you will enjoy.

National Volunteer month is the perfect opportunity to support The Salvation Army by getting involved with your community. Learn about volunteer opportunities that allow you to share #LoveBeyond and make a real impact in your neighborhood.
