Giving Tuesday: How to Give All Season

Nov 26, 2017

Giving Tuesday is the day that we traditionally focus on charitable giving and supporting our favorite nonprofit organizations. It's a day that organizations are extra diligent in explaining the impact of their services and how the public can help make a difference. But if you want to "give" and make a difference throughout the Christmas season, we have seven ideas for you.

1)  Ring a Bell
Grab your family, friends and a cup of hot cocoa and pick your favorite red kettle spot. If you ring a bell for two hours, you’ll raise enough money to feed a family of four. If you ring for four hours, you’ll feed a local senior for week. Register to Ring today!

2)  Make Christmas Possible
No child should be without a gift to open on Christmas morning. Provide a joyous holiday for a child in need through our Angel Tree program.

3)  Clean Out Your Coat Closet
Donate a new or gently-used coat through the Chicago Bears/Jewel-Osco Coat Drive. Coats can be dropped off at any Jewel-Osco location through January 1st.

4)  Answer Phones at the WBBM “Good Neighbor” Radiothon
Join us December 8th at Woodfield Mall to collection donations from WBBM radio listeners. Proceeds from the Good Neighbor Radiothon benefit The Salvation Army’s programs that fight hunger and homelessness. Call 773.205.3532 to register.

5)  Make Hygiene Kits with Your Family
Create kits with soap, wash cloths, combs/brushes, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrush, and a note of encouragement and donate them to a shelter. Visit salarmychicago.org/locations to contact The Salvation Army community center closest to you.

6)  Host a Drive
Shelters and food pantries always need supplies to give to those in need. Food items most often needed are canned vegetables, rice, potatoes, fruit in cups/cans, fruit snacks, granola bars and cereals. Other items needed include soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shower caps, socks, underwear, deodorant, and brushes.

7)  Share Your Time
Volunteer to help those in need this season. Your time and talents are our treasure! Call 773.205.3532 or email us for more information.
