Golfers Tee Up Life Change for Chicago’s Children in Need

Sep 5, 2019

After morning rains, the sun shone on The Salvation Army's 16th annual Hope "Fore" Kids Golf Classic at the beautiful Glen Club in Glenview.

Commissioner Barry Swanson, the Army’s new divisional leader in Chicago, Captain Shield and other Army officers and staff greeted the 128 golfers who came out for a fabulous day on the links, as well as a silent auction with prizes including in-demand golf trips, behind-the-scenes experiences, sports packages and more. Items in the online auction are available for bidding for two weeks after the outing.

The golf event and auction raise funds for the Army's children's programs, including camp, after-school activities, music lessons, Head Start early education, sports and more. These programs provide children an opportunity to be a kid in a safe space – something many children from the inner city don't get very often.

Pierce Cruz, a former Army summer camper and camp counselor, shared at the dinner following the golf outing about the impact such Army youth programming has had on him.

Thank you Kemper Sports, Wealth Enhancement Group, and Antunovich & Associates for presenting this year's event. And a special thank you to this year's golf committee: Paul Rigby, Ted Saul, Tom Nylen, Susan Koranda and Bruce Williamson.
