How to Help Texas Recover from Hurricane Harvey
A week after Hurricane Harvey made landfall, the sun is finally shining on Texas and water is starting to recede in some areas. The danger, however, is still very serious and the devastation is overwhelming. The Salvation Army has been on the ground since before the hurricane hit land to provide support in the aftermath of this historic storm.
Salvation Army donors are some of the most generous people in the world, and you have stepped up to make sure we are there to help the millions of people affected.
Here’s what we’ve done since last week:
- More than 9,100 of hours of staff and volunteer service
- More than 63,000 meals prepared
- Nearly 48,000 beverages distributed
- More than 31,000 snacks provided
- Nearly 900 food boxes designed to provide a family of 5 with a meal for several days
- More than 1,000 personal hygiene kits handed out
- Provided comfort and spiritual care for more than 1,000 people
The fastest and most efficient way for you to help those in Texas is to provide a financial donation. While material goods such as clothing and household items will be needed in the future, monetary support is needed now.
Take a look at the photo to the right, from the Associated Press. This is a Salvation Army Donation Center in Texas: currently overrun with donations of clothes and household goods that cannot be distributed yet.
Here’s why monetary donations are best right now:
- Provides flexibility to purchase most-needed supplies closest to the disaster location.
- Allows us to purchase items in bulk, which makes the donation go further.
- Pumps much needed financial support into the local economy that will desperately need it.
- Doesn’t take up physical space.
You can be there even when you can’t be there. To make a donation to help Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts:

Thank you for helping us serve others.
The Salvation Army does not place an administrative fee on disaster donations. When you donate to Hurricane Harvey through Salvation Army, 100 percent of the gift will be used in support of those relief efforts. It may be used to provide food and drinks to survivors, cleaning supplies and essential commodities, direct financial aid to those affected, or to support disaster relief workers serving in the area.
