Salvation Army DeKalb Receives $20,000 Donation from Christ Community Church

Oct 22, 2020

The Salvation Army in DeKalb is grateful for a $20,000 donation from the members of Christ Community Church. The generous donation goes to the Rescue Christmas campaign, which The Salvation Army launched nearly two months earlier than in a typical year, in order to meet the unprecedented need this year.

The DeKalb Corps Community Center has seen a significant uptick in need since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Major Angie Pennington, corps officer for the DeKalb Corps, anticipates the number of people who will need help with food, covering a rent or utility payment, or Christmas gifts to be at an all-time high in the coming months.

At the same time, due to the closing of some retail stores, consumers carrying less cash, and the decline in foot traffic, The Salvation Army could see up to a 50% decrease in funds raised nationally through the Red Kettles.

“This amazing gift from Christ Community Church will help make up for gaps in fundraising at the Red Kettles due to fewer locations and expected days of ringing as a result of COVID-19 restrictions,” said Major Angie Pennington, corps officer for the DeKalb Corps. “We are thankful for partners like Christ Community Church who help keep the bells ringing in DeKalb County all season long.”

The $20,000 donation will cover the cost of one month’s rent for 14 families and food to fill 600 bags of groceries at the food pantry. The money was given from a Christ Community Church year-end campaign to help “Neighbors in Need.”

“Christ Community Church loves our neighbors, and we know that the current reality of the pandemic has impacted a lot of people,” said Paul DeHaven, pastor of Christ Community Church, DeKalb campus. “Food insecurity is a big challenge for these individuals, and we want to support an organization that is making an impact in our community.”

Almost 70 percent of The Salvation Army’s donations are made during the Red Kettle Campaign. While the Red Kettles won’t hit the streets until November, The Salvation Army is asking for donations online now to help Rescue Christmas.
