Salvation Army Harbor Light Center Receives Prestigious CARF Accreditation
The Salvation Army is pleased to announce the Harbor Light Center has been issued a CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation for its adult residential and outpatient treatment programs for substance use disorders. The accreditation demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest quality of care while meeting CARF’s rigorous, internationally recognized standards.
The three-year accreditation extends through Aug. 31, 2023. CARF commended the Harbor Light Center for several strengths, including:
A person-centered approach, determining clients’ needs while also identifying strengths
Integration of primary care into treatment
Development of employment and educational skills as part of recovery
Providing nutritious meals to clients in residential program
Training of staff to administer naloxone to address overdose
Clients express feeling cared for and having a “new lease on life”
The accreditation is based on an on-site survey of the Harbor Light Center conducted on July 30-31. The survey consisted of confidential interviews, direct observation of operations, and a review of documents and records.
“Our CARF auditors stated that we met the technical criteria to be accredited, but they went on to comment on the atmosphere of love and concern of the staff for our clients and for each other. It is this genuine compassion that sets Harbor Light and The Salvation Army apart,” said Major Nancy Powers, executive director of the Harbor Light Center. “We seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the way we care for those who come for treatment.”
Harbor Light is a free, holistic program that treats the root causes of addiction. Each year, staff helps more than 1,200 individuals in Chicagoland overcome alcohol and drug dependence.
“It’s an honor to receive the CARF accreditation,” said Lt. Col. Lonneal Richardson, Salvation Army Metropolitan Division Commander. “This designation reaffirms The Salvation Army’s commitment to providing the highest level of individualized treatment while caring for the whole person.”
