Salvation Army on the Ground Serving Residents Affected by Hurricane Harvey
As Tropical Storm Harvey continues to drop feet of rain over the Gulf Coast, The Salvation Army is on site to serve those most impacted by the catastrophic storm.
Here's what is happening now:
- There are more than 40 mobile and field kitchens set up in the affected area. Each kitchen serves up to 1,500 meals a day. Additional mobile kitchens are being sent to the area from across the country. These mobile kitchens will provide meals, snacks and beverages for first-responders and survivors.
- Emergency supplies such as cleanup kits, water and food are ready for deployment. The Army is partnering with organizations such as Americares and Midwest Food Bank to supply water and food boxes to those in need.
- Salvation Army locations in Houston are providing shelter and clothing in addition to food and spiritual care.
- Staff and volunteer teams from across the southern United States have been already deployed for service. Additional teams from the Chicagoland area are awaiting deployment later this week.
- As communities along the coastline become accessible, Salvation Army staff and volunteers will begin providing direct services.
"This is a very hard time for those affected by Hurricane Harvey," said Major David Dalberg, Salvation Army Divisional Director of Emergency Disaster Services. "Many families have seen their homes and their communities destroyed. We want to make sure The Salvation Army is there not only to help in the immediate response with food and clean-up efforts, but also to offer emotional support as they begin to move forward and rebuild their lives."

The Salvation Army does not place an administrative fee on disaster donations. When you donate to Hurricane Harvey through Salvation Army, 100 percent of the gift will be used in support of those relief efforts. It may be used to provide food and drinks to survivors, cleaning supplies and essential commodities, direct financial aid to those affected, or to support disaster relief workers serving in the area.
Due to emergency conditions, The Salvation Army cannot guarantee that gifts of household goods or clothing donated now will be sent to disaster areas. In times of disaster, we first try to meet household needs from existing, pre-sorted stock. Please, continue to donate gently-used household goods to your local Salvation Army—you help your community today and may help with disaster relief needs tomorrow.
