The Salvation Army Offers Relief from Weekend Storms
A spate of severe storms hit the South this past weekend, causing widespread destruction. The Salvation Army was quick to respond, including assistance in:
Hamilton, Mississippi – This rural community was struck by a tornado Saturday night, causing at least one fatality. The Columbus Mississippi Salvation Army Corps deployed a mobile feeding unit to provide snacks, hydration and emotional and spiritual care for local residents. A mobile feeding unit from Tupelo, Mississippi, will soon join the relief effort as well.
Troy, Alabama – After what is believed to be a tornado caused severe damage to several buildings on Sunday, Salvation Army Dothan and Montgomery Corps are on the scene to provide help.
Alto, Texas – A mobile kitchen form Williamson County-Austin deployed to this small community affected by the storms. The kitchen, which has the ability to serve up to 1,500 meals a day, provided hundreds of meals and drinks to first responders and storm survivors, along with emotional and spiritual support.
Franklin, Texas – After an EF3 tornado destroyed and damaged many homes in the area, The Salvation Army of Bryan College Station, about 30 miles away, mobilized a kitchen and response team to provide support to survivors and first responders.
“The Salvation Army is prepared to support our communities in times of need and today the Bryan team was mobilized within minutes of the tornado touchdown in Franklin,” said Alvin Migues, Emergency Disaster Services Director in Texas. “The storms continue to affect additional communities and we have several units on standby to assist. We continue to pray for all who are affected by these storms as they move east into the South.”
Salvation Army emergency staff on the ground in all the affected areas will continue to assess the needs and respond with appropriate assistance.
