Time to Get Kids Ready to Go Back to School

Aug 8, 2018

As children begin to go back to school, there are a lot of details for parents to take care of: school supplies, physicals, clothing and more. This is a lot to handle for any family, but much more difficult for families with limited means. The Salvation Army hosts back-to-school fairs at most of their community centers to prepare kids for the upcoming school year.

The Salvation Army Freedom Center hosted its annual Back to School Health Fair in partnership with Rush University Medical Center and the Chicago Department of Public Health. Children attending the fair were able to get free physicals and immunizations, as well as vision, hearing and dental exams.

“The health fair is an opportunity for the community to come together to serve its residents,” said Major Nancy Powers, corps administrator for The Freedom Center. “This fair is essential to the good health of our community, as in the past diabetes, heart and lung problems have been detected and addressed to keep the children healthy.”

The fair had a party atmosphere with a DJ and dancing, and Major Merrill Powers provided his famous BBQ chicken for lunch.

Here are the upcoming back-to-school distributions:
