Shield of Caring Application

Shield of Caring assists residential customers who are past-due on their Nicor Gas bill and have a financial hardship including job loss, illness, military deployment, disability, etc. Income-eligible, residential customers can apply once every year for a grant up to $250 based on overall account balance and availability of program funds. It may take up to 30 days for grants to be applied to customer accounts.
 
Key Things to Note:
You may be eligible for additional assistance through other energy assistance programs such as LIHEAP or Sharing. If you meet the income requirements for those assistance options, please apply to those programs first so you can maximize your assistance. If you still have a past-due balance on your Nicor Gas account after receiving assistance from those programs, you may be eligible for a Shield of Caring grant.

Am I eligible?
You’re eligible to apply for a grant if you:

  • Are a residential Nicor Gas customer with a Nicor Gas account in your name
  • Have a past-due balance on your Nicor Gas account 
  • Have a household gross income in the last 30 days less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (see income guidelines).

Not a Nicor Gas customer? Do not complete this application. Check with your local utility for assistance options.

What do I need to apply?
To apply for a grant, you must:

  • Meet the eligibility guidelines in the Am I Eligible section
  • Know their Nicor Gas account number
  • Know their current past-due balance

To find your account balance and number, view your bill’s Account Summary section (see example here) or access online by logging in to My Account.
