The Salvation Army of Brookings County Service Extension Unit Celebrates Grand Opening

Oct 2, 2019

Forty community leaders and residents of Brookings, South Dakota, gathered on September 24 for a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the grand opening of The Salvation Army of Brookings County Service Extension Unit (SEU). SEUs are volunteer branches of The Salvation Army that are located in communities where there is not a traditional corps.

"We are so grateful for the amazing support we receive from the Brookings community,” said Nicole Biever, chair of The Salvation Army of Brookings County. “From the generous response to our fall coat drive to our small army of bell ringers to the large number of people who attended our grand opening ribbon cutting event, it's clear that the people of Brookings believe in the work of The Salvation Army and are willing to give generously to help their fellow man."

In addition to collaborating with local community partners on a variety of special projects during the year, including food drives and summer recreational programs for area youth, The Salvation Army of Brookings County also partners with local organizations to offer:

  • The Share the Warmth Project – providing new winter coats, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens/gloves to men, women and children in Brookings County who need cold weather outerwear.

  • The Back 2 School Project – providing backpacks and school supplies to families in need in Brookings County at a one-day event each August.

  • Personal Care Packs – offering personal hygiene items, laundry detergent and household cleaning products to those in Brookings County who are homeless or struggling to make ends meet.

The Salvation Army of Brookings County also offers emergency disaster services, as well as financial assistance with rent/mortgage and utilities payments and monetary support for individuals or families who can’t afford to purchase food, gas and other necessities.
