The Salvation Army of Omaha Salutes Those on the Front Lines of the Pandemic

May 7, 2020

Officers and staff at The Salvation Army of Omaha are providing hundreds of sack lunches to health care staff at seven Omaha hospitals on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8.

The event is part of a Salvation Army campaign at hospitals across Nebraska, South Dakota and western Iowa. Called “Heart for Our Heroes,” the aim of the campaign is to honor and salute the doctors, nurses and other health care staff who are working on the front lines of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This effort is taking place during National Nurses Week (May 6-12).

In Omaha, Salvation Army teams are distributing sack lunches to Methodist Hospital, Methodist Women’s Hospital, CHI Health Immanuel, CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, CHI Health Lakeside, CHI Health Midlands and the VA Hospital. The lunches will be prepared by local restaurants and are being underwritten by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.

Meanwhile, other Salvation Army Western Division units across the three-state area will be doing the same thing at hospitals in their respective communities.

“We want to say ‘thank you’ to health care professionals across the three states we serve who are working around the clock amid the pandemic,” said Maj. Greg Thompson of The Salvation Army Western Division. “These lunches are one small way to show our gratitude and support, and we’re thankful to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska for helping to make this initiative possible here in Omaha.”

“Making sure people are cared for is our top priority during this public health crisis,” said Steve Grandfield, chief executive officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.  “We are proud to join The Salvation Army in providing meals to the health care workers who are on the front lines, spending time away from their families and giving so much of themselves to care for patients in our communities.”
