The Salvation Army’s COVID-19 Relief Efforts at a Glance

Jun 24, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted nearly every aspect of daily life, including The Salvation Army’s operations in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro. We have adapted how we serve in order to adhere to social distancing restrictions, while at the same time we have continued to meet the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors in the community.

Here is a brief overview of The Salvation Army’s COVID-19 relief response since mid-March:

  • On June 10, staff and volunteers distributed food boxes – each of which contained supplies for three to five days of well-balanced meals – to 463 people who came through the drive-thru food pantry at the Burrows Center for Help and Hope.

  • In addition to the drive-thru food pantry, the Burrows Center has also filled more than 2,200 grocery orders from March through May.

  • Since mid-March the Salvation Army has partnered with Food Bank for the Heartland, Westside Nutritional Services, Saving Grace Perishable Food Rescue, local school districts and other nonprofits to distribute more than 247,000 meals at multiple sites around the metro for food-insecure children and their families while schools are closed.

  • The North Corps Community Care Kitchen served more than 5,000 grab-and-go lunches to individuals and families in need during April and May, and it’s reached out to deliver food boxes to seniors sheltering in place at Crown Tower, a low-income housing development for older adults in north Omaha.

  • During March and April more than 2,000 educational activity kits were handed out to families at a drive-thru distribution at the Kroc Center.

  • In addition to supporting those most in need, The Salvation Army also provided hundreds of sack lunches to health care staff at seven Omaha hospitals as part of the Heart for Our Heroes campaign on May 7 and 8 to honor and salute the doctors, nurses and other health care staff working on the front lines of the pandemic.
