The Weekly Devotion for the Week of March 18

Mar 15, 2024

Give generously, joyfully, and without selfish ambition.

In these two verses, Jesus speaks about charity, about giving to those in need.  He emphasizes not just the act of giving, but the manner in which it is done.  He speaks of secrecy, of humility, and of a kind of giving that is devoid of pride and ostentation.

In our world today, it’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking recognition and praise for our good deeds.  We may find ourselves tempted to donate only when our names are to be plastered on plaques or when we are ensured a round of applause, but Jesus challenges this mindset.

When He says, “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,” He’s speaking metaphorically about the need for discretion.  He’s urging us to give without seeking acknowledgment or reward.  True charity is not about boosting our egos or enhancing our reputations; it’s about alleviating the suffering of others out of genuine compassion and love.

The grace of secret giving lies in its purity.  When we give without expecting anything in return, we align ourselves with the divine principles of generosity and selflessness.  Our motives become untainted by the desire for recognition, and our actions speak volumes about the depth of our faith.

Jesus assures us of the Father’s reward for those who give in secret.  He tells us that our Heavenly Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward us openly.  This promise is a source of great comfort and encouragement for all who strive to live lives of faithfulness and obedience.

As we reflect on these words, let us commit ourselves to living lives marked by secret generosity -- knowing that in doing so, we participate in the unfolding of God’s kingdom here on earth.
